First Semi Final – Match Report

Fitzroy 0.5.5  def by  Surrey Park 2.3.15

Goals: nil

Best: Jordan, Dom, Hoddy, Jason Ho, Jase He

Fitzroy remain in the hunt for their second flag in three years despite a 10 point loss to Surrey Park at Telfer Reserve last weekend.

Appalling conditions made scoring difficult for both sides, with the blustery winds resulting in just two goals for the entire afternoon.

Fitzroy started the better of the sides on a day where chances on goal were extremely limited. Alexander Croft had a difficult opportunity to put the Roys in front early in the quarter, but after fifteen minutes of football both sides went into the first change without a major on the board.

The second quarter started in a similar fashion to the first as both sides slugged it out on the far wing. James Hodson and Jesse Radonic were brilliant at ground level in the opening minutes of the term, while skipper Dom Pound-Palmieri continued to show off his aerial ability.

After another hard-fought quarter Fitzroy were still without a goal, the deficit however just five points as the Roys regrouped for a big third term.

The wind failed to drop in the third and continued to cause havoc for both sides who struggled to move the ball forward.

Jordan Batten continued his season-best form after the break, the pacy winger giving plenty of drive through the midfield and soldiering on despite copping nasty knock to the head.

Down 0.4 to 1.2 at the final change, Fitzroy were still in the hunt despite failing to trouble the scorers for most of the afternoon.

Hoping to replicate their strong final term from last week Fitzroy started the last quarter the better of the sides twice going forward but failing to put the ball between the big sticks.

When Chris Smith’s miraculous effort sailed wide with five minutes to go the margin was narrowed once more, before a dubious free-kick gifted Surrey a late goal to seal the game.

Disappointed but far from dejected, Fitzroy will regroup during the week and set their sights on knocking off Glen Iris who escaped from defeat in a thriller against Canterbury last weekend.

Jordan Batten’s return to form was the game’s big positive, as was Jason Hoang and Jason Hewitson’s sensational form in the backline.

With a grand final spot on the table for the winners, and an early end to the season for the losers, expect a fast-paced and hard-fought battle between the two arch rivals at Vic Park next weekend.
