Fitzroy caps off a fine season
Congratulations to the Colts 4, the U14 Browns, U14 Greens, U13
Golds and Under 13 Blues for making this week's Grand Finals.
While none of the teams made it to that elusive first place, we
couldn't have been prouder of the boys' efforts.
The support staff, parents, family, friends and supporters - who
were with you in spirit, or lucky enough to watch your valiant efforts
on Sunday - thank you sincerely for the way you played the game
and represented your club, not just on Sunday but all season.
It's fitting this week to feature an image of the Colts 4, a team
who really believed in themselves and against the odds, the pundits
and the critics, made it to the Grand Final (ultimately only missing
out by 3 points).
We think you'll agree that this shot encapsulates the determination
and dedication that took the boys to the final contest.
Go Roys!

12 Browns bow out, but FIVE Fitzroy sides
to contest Grand Finals!

The Fitzroy Under 12 Browns, pictured above in front of the grandstand
at Brunswick Street, ended their season going down fighting in their
Preliminary Final on Sunday.
The team can be immensely proud of their efforts throughout 2006.
The Colts4, Under 14 Brown and Under 13 Gold sides
all won their Preliminary Finals to join the Under 14 Greens and
Under 13 Blues in Grand Finals next Sunday.
Congratulations and best of luck to all. GO 'ROYS!
First-semi finalists do Fitzroy
proud
This week, four Fitzroy teams lined up to play knockout
games as first-semi finalists. Although only the Colts won through
to fight another day, all our teams played with true Fitzroy spirit
- for their club, their teammates and individual honour.
Parents, siblings, aunts and uncles, grandparents,
cousins and friends flocked to the grounds to cheer on their local
heroes. The disappointment of getting knocked out of the finals
was quickly replaced with feelings of great pride and the realisation
that every contribution has been rewarded ten fold in a fabulous
season we can all look back on and build on.
Well done U10 Blue 2s, U11 Gold and U12 Blues on a
great season and best of luck in the year ahead!

Colts 1 make their last game one
to remember
Three weeks ago, the Colts 1 made a pact to end their footy campaign
for the Lions on a high. The boys did just that, netting wins over
the three top teams three weeks in a row, leaving them just outside
the final four.
Today, in what was their last game together for the mighty Junior
Fitzroy Football Club, a brave and determined Colts 1 team blitzed
third-placed Ivanhoe in a bone-crunching encounter. For most of
the boys it was their last game for the Juniors after 9 years at
the Club.

Thanks for the great memories, boys!
Glass ceiling shattered at Fitzoy
Next week, the U14 Greens are facing their biggest
test of the season - a second semi-final appearance against Greythorn
at Telfer Reserve. So this Sunday when the team lined up to play
a combined Kew Comets/Kew Rovers side for an all-important practice
match at Stradbroke Park, the coach didn't muck around. He knew
he needed the best back-up possible and he called on it - an all-female
support staff enlisted from inside the team's ranks.

Three members of the elite team, from left, Betty
Shallard, Helen Doherty and Bridget Gale.
U14
Greens celebrate the stellar careers of 9 of their stars

Playing against the top team this Sunday, the Under 14 Greens celebrated
50 games for Ryan Cuell, Chris Doherty, Tom Dyson, Patrick King,
Peter Melilli, Viv Michie, Gus Selaidinakos, Zander Ripon and Michael
Velianis. The team rose to the occasion with an impressive win.
In toppling the ladder leaders, the boys moved into second spot,
not only ensuring a place in the finals, but letting everyone know
they're ready and able for the ultimate challenge.
Thanks to team mates Peter, Chris, PK, Viv and Nicholas for the
massive banner!
Under 13 Gold delivers a warning
to all comers
The boys from U13 Gold scored an uncompromising win this Sunday.
By all accounts they did not even give the opposition a chance.
So bring on the finals and, with them, the challenge to prove what
they really can deliver!

Sunday set the stage for the U13 to come out and
put their skills on display.
(Thanks to Tiffany Palermo for the montage.)
Under 13 Blue 2s win unseats
ladder leader

The victorious Under 13 Blue 2 wallk off together
after their courageous win last Sunday
In the twelfth week of a long season more often than
not slogged out in wet and rough conditions, the Under 13 Blue 2s
hit the ultimate high last Sunday when the boys dug deep and pulled
off a win against competition leaders, Camberwell.
The win not only propelled the boys into a position
just outside the 4, but gave their fellow Under 13 Blue 1s the top
spot.
According to the boys, this is only the beginning
of better things to come, and they've got just one thing on their
minds - a berth in the finals and a win overall!
Trivia Night sell-out success
Friends and supporters of the Fitzroy Junior Football Club packed
the Richmond Town Hall on Saturday night to enjoy a rollicking night
of trivia and serious fundraising.
People were happy to go to ridiculous lengths to score bonus points
for their teams, from donning Dolly Parton wigs, climbing on tables
to dance to the soundtrack of the Rocky Horror Show, throwing money
at targets, to breaking their backs doing the limbo.
In the end, the scores were very close, proving what wasted lives
the FJFC parents and supporters have spent watching daytime soapies
and late night movies.

Under 13 Blues do it for the 50 gamers

Mitch Clemens (left) and Jack Ford (right) celebrated their 50th
game with a resounding win for the Under 13 Blue 1s at WT Peterson
oval. The team is having a stellar year and yesterday's 10 goal
win over Doncaster propelled the team to the top of the ladder!
First game back after the holiday break and the Under 12 Blues
were ready to roll
The image isn't all that clear, but the intentions of the FJFC
Under 12 Blues certainly were. The boys were up for the task and
ready to face all comers. Unfortunately for their opponents, Heidelberg,
this determined Fitzroy outfit knew their history and knew what
they had to do.

10 years after their forefathers were forced to move north and
merge with Brisbane, the young Fitzroy players did the old boys
proud and earned the right to do what countless Fitzroy teams have
done before them: belted out the song after a determined win.

U12 Browns storm towards the
finals

Another great win for the Fizroy U12 Browns as they head towards
August with only one goal in their minds. With their 9th win in
the bag, and their only loss a close 2 points, the boys are brimming
with confidence and indomitable team spirit.
Go Roys!
Sheeds spotted talent spotting at FJFC
On the evening of his 600th VFL/AFL game, Kevin Sheedy graced the
Fitzroy Bowling Club as Fitzroy Junior Football Club's special guest
presenter.
We thought he was doing us a favour, but the next week we found
out the real reason, when on the media he revealed his intention
of signing up any and every uncontracted player of potential brillance
to boslter the Don's fragile lineup.
Here he is getting the low down on FJFC talent from his former
star Essendon backman and FJFC coach, Kevin Walsh.
FJFC gathers on senior team reporting night and Stan Alves holds
the crowd in the palm of his hand

You could've heard a pin drop
The Fitzroy Bowling Club was packed on Sunday night for the senior
FJFC teams' reporting night with parents, players and their families
loudly making merry and discussing the day's events.
So when MC Michael Fry introduced football legend Stan Alves and
appealed for quiet, he didn't have much success - at least initially.
But as Stan unfolded his football journey everyone in the room
listened. From the days in the outlying suburbs of Melbourne where
he started in the thirds and slept in his treasured but oversized
jumper, onwards to a series of devastating rejections and putdowns
about his slight frame from everyone from Norm Smith down, to the
glory days of captaining Melbourne and winning the premiership with
North in the twilight of his career, right through to the gut-renching
sacking as St Kilda coach, this was a story of a footballer who
just wouldn't take no for an answer.
It was also the story of someone who valued what football had to
give, who put winning in perspective, overshadowed by the mateship
and fun derived from playing with and supporting your teammates.
The individual teams followed with stories of their own successes
and endeavours, and a wonderful night was capped off with a stiring
rendition of the Fitzroy Club song led by the U14 Browns.
U11 Gold knows what it means to have eyes for the ball

In last week's game, the U11 Gold's fronted up to
competition favourites, Kew. Despite never really threatening to
win the game, as these images show, the guys never gave up the fight,
and throughout the four quarters, maintained a good focus that belied
their tender years.
U10 Gold completes the quadrella
Over the past few weeks we've been featuring shots of the youngest
cohort of FJFC teams, the U10s.
This week we focus on the U10 Golds and despite what looks like
a clear day, they too braved rough and windy conditions last week,
and they did it a long way from home.
This shot features John Brock who donned the trainer's singlet
but opted for doing the job without footwear.
John's reasoning: In the mud and hoar frost of a Warrandyte morning,
the threat of pneumonia was preferable to ruining his shoes, and
John ran the water bottle in bare feet all game.

Team Reporting Night
The FJFC Junior Teams Reporting Night was a spectacular success
with young star, St Kilda's Aaron Fiora joined by AFL's 600-game
coach, Kevin Sheedy, as special guest presenters.
The players from the four Under 10 teams got up first and sang
'We're a Mighty Bunch' together. Then the individual U10 teams
addressed the gathering.
Kevin Sheedy arrived to universal acclaim and spoke about his
own experiences in junior footy. He emphasised how great it is
that all types and shapes play Australian Football, from 'skinny'
mobile players like Kevin Bartlett, Keith Grieg, Robert Flower,
and Michael Tuck to the bulkier stalwarts like Tony Lockett, Jason
Dunstall and Mick Nolan. He also put losing in perspective, highlighting
the fact he lost the first 5 games of his coaching career at Essendon.
As he pointed out, losing can actually have some real benefits.
In Essendon's case, one week's massive losing margin gave two
young boys called Hird and Mecuri an opportunity the next, and
27 weeks later, they were premiers!

The Two Kevins front the crowd
Kevin Sheedy also talked about the role he played in developing
junior football, inventing smaller-size footballs, putting dimples
on the ball so small hands wouldn't slip, and demonstrating his
backward-spinning handball. He took questions from the crowd and
signed autographs.
The other guest was St Kilda player Aaron Fiora. He too spoke
about his junior football career and enlightened the captive audience
with insights into his current playing experiences. Aaron was
good enough to draw the raffle and was ably followed by the seniors
of the juniors, the Under 11s and 12s, who concluded the night
with their own brand of unforgettable and entertaining football
stories.

Kevin Walsh poses the tough questions of St Kilda's
Aaron Fiora

In a week that saw Bulldog's great, slim-line, local hero Robert
Murphy do a season-ending knee, this week's FJFC hero shot features
Jacob Fraser from the trusty U11 Greens. Jacob was luckier than
Murph though, and is expected to front up next week to play his
usual gutsy game.
Team Reporting Nights
It's time for all teams to prepare mid-season reports or performances.
This year there will be two Team Reporting Nights - one for the
younger, and one for the older age groups.
Another FJFC U10 team braves
the weather and comes up trumps
Last week, it was our U10 Green team who faced up to a wet and
windy Sunday morning and revelled in the conditions. While the coaching
team huddled under umbrellas, the boys hit the field running, and
kept it up until the final siren sounded and the game was theirs.

Fitzroy Junior Football Club
establishes its own Conduct Panel
The Fitzroy Junior Football Club is committed to conducting
its activities - on and off the field - as a model club and we stress
the need for good conduct by everyone involved in the Club. In 2006,
a new group has been formed to investigate any matters relating
to alleged misconduct of parents, supporters, officials or players.
The FJFC Conduct Panel will convene
in response to any written notification of an issue or incident.

and a team short. Additional individual cards can also be ordered.
Colts Camp 2006
The inaugural Fitzroy Colts training camp was held last weekend
(25-26 March) at Wombat Corner camp in Emerald with 21 players participating
in a range of activities to assist team cohesion, fitness levels
and overall understanding of the Colts football strategy. A team
based competition was held throughout the weekend with the initial
activity involving a variety of timed initiative challenges requiring
the players to put their thinking caps on to maximise points scored
for their team. The remainder of Saturday focussed on the Colts
football strategy including team rules, set play options and pre/post
game preparation and involved the respective teams presenting assigned
topics back to the group followed by a practice game at the Emerald
oval. A fiercely contested footy trivia quiz on Saturday night wasn't
enough to prevent many of the boys having a late night although
the beep test at 8am the next morning made them wish they had hit
the sack earlier the night before. The camp concluded on Sunday
with a round robin of camp activities (ropes/basketball/flying fox),
football meeting, timed 1.6km run and presentation of the Colts
Camp football, signed by all the players, to the winning team.
The weekend proved to be fantastic preparation for the 2006 season
and will become be an annual fixture for our Colts players. We would
like to express our thanks to the original Fitzroy Football Club
for their financial support, via the calendar sales, that enabled
the costs of the camp to be kept at a very reasonable level for
the players.
