Round 4 – Match Report

Fitzroy 4.10.34  def by  Canterbury 6.5.41

Goals: Zander 3, Dom 1

Best: Zander, Dylan, Dom, McGee, Patty

Inclement weather and inaccurate kicking dampened Fitzroy's stellar start to the season, as the Roys suffered their first defeat of 2006 to a gallant Canterbury side. Falling seven points short in a physical and demanding match, Fitzroy fought hard in their first game in the wet for near to two years.

Dylan Patcas was best on ground in his first of three games as captain, dominating the muddy centre while controlling the midfield. Dom Pound-Palmieri was also at his regular best while Zander Croft provided a focal point up forward yet again.

Starting the better of the sides Fitzroy had the majority of the play in the early stages but failed to capitalise on the scoreboard. Leading at the first change but kicking an inaccurate 1.4, Fitzroy once again started the better of the sides in the second before the Cobras played themselves into form.

Excelling in the wet the Cobras continued to control the run of play in the third as Fitzroy struggled to replicate their third-quarter heroics of weeks gone by.

As the rain came down heavier the lead became harder to peg back, and despite some gallant efforts in the last term by Patty Williamson-Hill, Chris Smith, James McGee and Zander Croft, Fitzroy fell seven points short.

An impressive effort in trying conditions, the boys from Brunswick Street were far from disgraced and can look forward to a finer forecast for the coming weekend.

Already a quarter of the way into the home-and-away season, Fitzroy should be proud of their performances in the opening month of football, but at the same time wary of the size and calibre of our forthcoming opposition.
