FITZROY BLUE 3 vs. ST.MARY’S T Sunday 2 August 2009
Our Team Manager Chris, said it all in his email earlier this week, Fitzroy Blues 3 vs. St. Mary’s T (t for tough). This was always going to be a hard game, but one we needed to win. When we last played St. Mary’s T they defeated us 101 to 32. With St. Mary’s third on the ladder and us fourth, the scene was set for an exciting game.
First quarter saw Charlie shine in defence, ensuring not a single goal got through the big sticks. Himi took a nice mark and not long after kicked the first goal for the Roys. John kicked the second goal for the Roys, windy conditions made marking the ball difficult, but Isaac took two great marks and a great mark to Michael T. Martin took a fantastic run down the ground, later our third goal to James (today’s captain), and a fourth to Himi. The quarter time siren sounded, with Fitzroy in the lead 4 goals 1 point to St. Mary’s 4 straight points.
Quarter time discussions were about the conditions, swirly winds, with a lot of discussion about who had the advantage.
Second quarter started with St. Mary’s getting all the ball, all the scores of the quarter were to St. Mary’s, with the ball staying down the city end of the oval. The wind continued to make marking difficult. Fitzroy went into the rooms at half time without adding to their score, with St. Mary’s adding 2 goals 3 points to their score, the advantage was definitely kicking to the city end of the ground.
Isaac was strong in attack in the third quarter kicking his first goal and the Roys fifth. Elia took two super marks, kicking the ball down to attack. The Roys sixth goal was to John (his second); the Roys were strong in defence keeping St Mary’s score for the third quarter to one straight goal.
In the fourth quarter, the wind blew stronger, with the advantage swirling around St. Mary’s goal, St. Mary’s added 1 goal, and 4 points to their score with the Roys finding it hard to get the ball to their end. When it finally got there, Connor’s relentless harassing near the goal square panicked St. Mary’s defenders, allowing Isaac to pick up the ball and kick the sealer (his second), another win to the Roys.
Next week, the last game for the home and away matches…….GO ROYS!!!!!
