FITZROY vs GLEN IRIS

Sunday morning’s windy conditions, meant kicks that would normally have gone through the big sticks, went through for a point. This meant that while we had the use of wind in the first quarter we were unable to fully capitalize on our possession of the football.

Second quarter started and we knew that Glen Iris would have the advantage of the wind. However, the Roys fought hard during this quarter and continued to add to the score, with an amazing mark and subsequent goal by Mick Power. Captain for the day, Adam played his usual consistent game of attack and chasing the ball. With Nick N, protecting the oppositions goals and Issac ducking and weaving through the opposition players. The boys left the field at half time in the lead.

The second half of the game the boys continued to play hard, with relentless tackling and marks by Martin. Jon had rotated his bench during the break to bring on fresh legs and it was showing return in the relentless attack. However, top of the ladder, Glen Iris, did not give up and snuck a goal against play in this third quarter. While the roys were ahead on the scoreboard many wondered whether the 6 behinds some (some easy shots) may be our undoing.

In the last quarter the Roys came out full of fight and went hard at the ball, setting up play on the defensive side of the ground. The game was in the balance, with both teams fighting for ascendancy. But Glen Iris had seen that possession did not necessarily translate to gaols. They capitalized on the wind to deliver the ball to their forwards with the assistance of the wind. Two quick goals by Glen Iris put them in the lead and even though the Roys did not give up, another later goal by Glen Iris shattered the Roys’ dream of defeating their top of the ladder team.

A great game boys and coaches, better luck next week against the other Blue Roys.
