FITZROY 3 vs ASHBURTON We knew it would be a tough match against Ashburton, but not how tough. With five teams barely separated on the ladder, just outside the four, every win would count. Sunday’s weather was perfect for a game of footy. Cool, not cold, no wind to speak of. Adam and Nick B both celebrated their 50th game, having played their first game together as well. The only things missing were two players and the coach, all struck down by winter ailments. The game started and within two shakes of the proverbial sauce bottle the opposition had kicked two goals. Ashburton was using its height well, but we managed to get one back with a goal on the run from Alex. By quarter time the opposition had two more goals leaving us 16 points adrift at the first break. The second quarter started with another goal to Ashburton before we finally managed to start turning the tide. Martin and John were resolute in defence. In the forward line James took a great mark from a Finn short pass, but pushed his shot to the left. On the kick out the ball fell to the ground and Isaac burst through a pack with ball in hand and sent it straight through the middle. For the next few minutes we peppered the goals, but no majors. Ashburton got another goal. Alex immediately replied with his second for the day. At half time we had narrowed the gap to 14 points. The third quarter was like an arm wrestle. The Roys had a lot of the ball around the forward 50 but couldn’t get on the scoreboard. It was grinding football, with Himi taking on three or four opponents at a time. Elia and Hudson provided great drive through the middle. Against the run of play Ashburton moved the ball forward and goaled. Eventually a clever kick from James gave Nick B a shot from about 20 metres. Straight as a die. Ashburton scored again leaving Fitzroy 21 points behind at three-quarter time. The team knew what was needed – at least four goals in 15 minutes, and keep Ashburton goalless. On a day when we had just four goals against eight it was a big task. In the final quarter we got plenty of delivery from the midfield and back line. As a result the ball stayed in our attacking half. Bit by bit the players wore Ashburton down with great individual efforts all over the field. Isaac scored two goals, then James one. As the clock ticked down players from both sides threw themselves into the fray. Three minutes to go and Isaac kicked Fitzroy’s last goal, putting the team ahead for the first time. Ashburton surged in the remaining minutes. Several times they drove forward, only be to be repelled by the strong defence. Finally, after what seemed like ten minutes of intense pressure, the siren sounded for the last time. A five point win to Fitzroy that put us into the four.
It was an excellent team effort from every player. From the tallest players to the smallest, everyone contributed in an outstanding demonstration of never give up football.
Congratulations to our 50 gamers of the day; Adam and Nick B
