First Semi Final- 16 August 2009Fitzroy-3 v St. Mary’s-T
Wild, windy weather set the scene for the First Semi-Final tussle between Fitzroy and St. Mary. An exciting, nail-biting game followed, with 100% effort from all the boys. While not a pretty game it showed the hard endeavor that the Fitzroy Blue team had developed over the season.
With a minute left on the clock Fitzroy was in the lead by 2 points having protected this lead from a burst of brilliant team work in the third quarter. This brought back memories of two years ago when the Under 11 blues (of which a number of current squad came from) played in game that is now part of Fitzroy folklore. Alas, a freaky kick by St Mary's from a difficult position on the boundary was caught by the swirling wind and driven towards goal to narrowly miss the goal post only to end up going through for a goal. Within seconds of the restart the final siren sounded, ending our finals campaign fro this year.T he scores below describe what a close hard-fought game was played at Bulleen Park.
While the boys were naturally disappointed after such a great effort, the coaches and team regrouped as one and proudly walked back to their change rooms to the cheers and claps of many that attended the match.
A big thank-you to all the supporters; grandmas, grandpas, brothers, sisters and members the gold team, who came to support the boys in the very wintery conditions.
A great season boys, Jon, Howard, Peter and Chris, thank-you for making the 2009 footy season such an exciting one, for your all supporters.
