FITZROY 2 v KEW GREENS 11th July 2010

At today's home game played at Brunswick Street, the Roys celebrated the 50th games of both Michael and Jesse. The weather was sunny with a slight wind, but the ground dry and most of the mud from previous weeks had dried up.

The first quarter saw all of the play going Kew's way. Great in defence where Darcy H and Himi, with Tom trying to clear the ball out of packs and get it down the Roy's end. Goals and points were added to the opposition's score. Luckily, Kew's bad judgement of the slight wind meant many kicks did not go through the middle of the goals. Great smothering by Nick meant another point to Kew. Josh tried hard to get the ball to the Roy's end, but Kew were way too strong down the city side wing. Kew kicked 4 goals, 6 points, keeping the Roy scoreless for the first quarter.

Tom kicked the first score for the second quarter, a point, but Kew quickly responded with another goal. Noah marked strongly in defence, Kew kept adding to the score board with two more points. James was in the play, taking two great marks and getting a free kick. but the Roys could not get that elusive goal. Another point to the Roys, this time Jesse, and a charge down the ground by Martin, which deserved a goal, unfortunately, nothing. Another point on the board to the Roy's this time to Mick P. The siren sounded and the Roys were 42 points down at the half time break.

After the half time break the Roys came out fighting, perhaps it was the coloured snakes and oranges that fired them up! The marking improved with great marks to Sam, and Himi and James. James kicked the first goal for the game after marking the ball from Himi. The Roy's tired their best, but Kew always seemed to have a loose man. Another mark to Himi, then to Sam who goaled and the Roys were back on track, they were finally showing what they could do. Another score to James, this time a point then on the siren after receiving a free kick for an incident down field, Nick lined up and kicked the Roy's third goal.

Coach Howard's advise at the third quarter break was the game was not out of reach, "...we can win if we kick 7 goals to their no score..." The Roys were determined, a point to Martin, another point to Tom. This time the Roys did not let Kew respond with a goal, Himi rushed the point. Noah continued to mark and work hard in defence keeping the ball away from Kew's goal. The ball was back down the Roy's end this time Mick with a great kick, just hitting the top of the goal post, another point to the Roys. The Roys had all the play, another point to the Roys, and another, then a goal to the Roys and another point to Sam then Himi.

With more accurate kicking the Roys could have nearly got there, the second half of football showed determination and heart..... GO ROYS.
