FITZROY 2 v SURREY PARK GREENS 8th August 2010
Early morning games aren't a favourite for our Roy Boys, never the less, this was our last game for the season and we were ready to finish our season on a high. Again this week, the opposition could not field a full team, so once again we were forced to play a team of 15, with coach Howard having to rotate the team throughout the game. With very sunny and windy conditions, Sam started the game with a GOAL. Surrey Park followed up with a point. Martin took up from were he had left off last week, bulldozing through packs, and Hudson in ruck, made sure the ball was tapped and hit forward in the Roy's direction. Himi smothered a certain goal to Surrey Park as it went through for a point. This was going to be a tussle. Surrey Park got the next goal and point before Hudson GOAL-ed for the Roys. Walt took a strong mark, before Surrey Park kicked another point. That wind was making straight kicking difficult. Mick punched the ball out, getting the play away from the opposition's goals. Unfortunately, the ball was down Surrey Park's end again and they goaled. Strong tackling by Jesse and Nick, made it difficult for the Surrey Park players. Surrey Park scored another point, before the ball was back down our end and Darcy H added to the Roy's score with a point. Then, in the windy conditions, Sam took a strong mark, who passed it to Mick who then GOALed .Surrey Park added another point and goal to the board before the quarter time siren, the Roys were down by 5 points. The second quarter and Himi continued to show strong defence, and was awarded a free kick which were few and far between for the Roys! Elia marked strongly, as did Sam who got the ball to Elia, then passed it to Hudson, who kicked his second GOAL for the game. Gilbert made sure he stayed in the Roy's goal square, working hard to ensure the ball stayed in the forward line - and that elusive goal. Surrey Park continued to add to their score, then Sam got the ball and GOALed. As the siren sounded one more goal was added to Surrey Park's score. The Roy's went into the rooms at half time 20 points down. All that can be reported on for the final two quarters is that the Roys fought hard to get back, losing the game by only 14 points. A great effort team, in a game that was rough, with one of our players finishing with a big lump to head and a trip to Emergency Department at Box Hill Hospital. The day ended with a great 5th quarter at the North Fitzroy Arms, where the team, coach, manager, assistant coach, boundary umpire and the Fitzroy Under 14 Green's loyal supporters gathered for a great celebration. Thank-you to Howard, Peter, Mark and Chris for their dedicated and hard work with the boys this season. There is only one last thing to say for the 2010 season...... GO ROYS!!!!!!!!! And see you all next year.
