FITZROY 2 v ASHBURTON GREENS 18 April 2010

Today's game was played in perfect conditions, sunny, warm with a slight breeze. A beautiful autumn day at Brunswick Street Oval.

The game started with very "scrambley" play. The ball going back and forth between the players of both teams with out really getting anywhere. Then Jesse got he ball down to the Roy's goal square, where James eventually put the first score on the board, a goal for the Roys. Another quick goal went to the Roys, this time to Floyd. The following two goals went to the opposition before the Roys got another score on the board this time a point, followed by a goal to Isaac. Martin was very strong in attack getting the ball up to the Roys goal square with strong marking and running. Even after adding one more point to the score the Roys went into the first quarter break one point down.

The first score for the second quarter was a rushed point to the Roys. After strong attack by Martin and Nick more scores were added to the board, including a goal to Martin. Sam and Martin seemed to be everywhere in this quarter. A knock to Elia didn't stop him getting up, to spear the ball down towards our goal. And when the ball got down to Ashburton's goal Charlie defended the goal and ensured what looked like a certain goal was touched through for a point. A beautiful run down the center of the field by Himi deserved more then just a single point. The Roys went in a half time 5 points down, 4 goals, 7 points to Ashburton's 5 goals, 6 points, a very even game.

The first goal of the third quarter went to the Roys, after a great mark by James, who passed it onto Floyd, for his second of the game. A great mark by Himi, followed by a booming kick got the ball down to the Roy's scoring end. With plenty of free kicks going to Ashburton, again Charlie worked hard to ensure that their kicks didn't result in a goal. A super kick from James evened the scores at 6 goals, 7 points each. Three more points and a third goal to Floyd were added to the scoreboard, and it was the Roys that lead at the end of the third quarter, this time the difference was 2 points.

Fourth quarter started with a fourth goal to Floyd, but then a quick answer by Ashburton by kicking a goal and two points left the scores even again. Himi was working hard in the last line of defence while Charlie, took a well earned breather on the bench. The Roys quickly got the ball down to Sam who kicked a goal putting the Roys 6 points up. Another point to Martin, meant the difference was 7 points, after the close game, the Roys looked like they were in a winning position, however the Roys stopped scoring. The last three scores; 1 point and 2 goals went to Ashburton, and at the final siren Ashburton were the victors by 1 point.

Bad luck boys, a great game and a close game. See you next week at Greythorn Park. GO ROYS!
