FITZROY 2 v Glen Iris 2nd May 2010

We last played Glen Iris in the final round of the 2009 season. That time Glen Iris won, but both teams made the Blue division finals.

We played Glen Iris again on 2 May. This time both teams had been promoted to the Green division. Would the result be different? Would Fitzroy be able to break the voodoo and win its first ever game at its home ground?

The first part of the opening quarter was tough footy. Fitzroy had the better of the play and scored four behinds in a row, including a poster. The first time Glen Iris went forward Hudson managed to beat two opposition players. Against the run of play Glen Iris scored two goals. Fortunately Fitzroy was able to match them, with two goals of their own before the end of the quarter, one to Isaac on the run and the other to Mick from a free kick. Fitzroy was 2-7-19 to Glen Iris’s 2-1-13.

After the break Glen Iris again scored the first goal, closing the margin between the teams. However, Fitzroy managed the next few goal with great team work. Floyd kicked the first two, one from a pass from Darcy and the other from Sam. Glen Iris got the next two in what was becoming a real see-saw contest with the ball flowing from end to end. The first half finished with three more Fitzroy goals, including a long bomb from Martin and a snap by Sam.

At the long break Fitzroy had managed to increase its lead to 7-8-50 against 5-3-33.

The third quarter started as the others had: a goal to Glen Iris. Once again the Fitzroy team fought back with fantastic team work at both ends of the ground. Isaac kicked two goals, one a banana from near the boundary. Noah took a mark in the goal square and Tom made a strong mark just before the final break. Fitzroy was a comfortable 31 points ahead with 20 minutes to go.

The final quarter was by far the toughest. For the fourth time in the game Glen Iris got the first goal. For most to the quarter both teams found it hard to convert forward thrusts into scoring opportunities. This was like the Glen Iris of last year. The game ended with just one more goal to Isaac.

Final scores were Fitzroy 12-12-84 and Glen Iris 9-6-60. Skipper for the day Mick awarded the Captain’s prize to Elia.
