FITZROY 2 v SURREY PARK GREENS 9th May 2010

Perfect weather, the Mother's Day match at Brunswick Oval was the scene of the Roy's fifth match against Surrey Park.

The first goal of the game went to the Roys, after being cleared by Issac, then to Sam with a great mark and kick straight to James, who marked the ball and goaled. Himi was strong in defence repelling a number of early forays into the Surrey Park goal square. Down the other end of the ground Sam led a spirited Fitzroy attack to get the ball into the Roy's goal square. The game was going "goal for goal" with a great goal to Noah. Then Noah was instrumental in passing the ball to Elia, who then goaled. Surrey Park scored, then back down the Roy's end with James to Elia, Elia to James who kicked his second goal, and again the scores were even.

The first two points of the second quarter went to Surrey Park, but the first goal of the second quarter went to Floyd, this was followed by a goal by John, a goal to Surrey Park and then three points to the Roys. Himi dodging and baulking got the Roy's out of trouble on more than one occasion during the second term again. At the end of the quarter the Roys went into the half time break only 5 points up.

Coach Howard's half time message was simple "MORE RUNNING AND MORE COMMUNICATION."

Third quarter is generally known as the premiership quarter because a game's outcome can be determined when neither team has the ascendency up till now. The Roys took Howard's words of wisdom to heart and opened the scoring with a point and goal to captain of the day Sam. Our borrowed player for the day Number 26 Charlie, continued to take strong marks in defence and creating opportunities for the team. John kicked his second goal for the game to put the Roys three goals up. Two goals and a point to Issac quickly followed and it looked like Fitzroy was building to a unassailable lead. However, in this league the roy boys are learning quickly that teams never say die as Surrey Park began to answer the challenge and kicked their first goal for the quarter. Fitzroy responded through James who kicked his third goal. Surrey Park then kicked the next two goals and a point closing Fitzroy's lead down. One final attack for the term by Fitzroy lead to a well taken mark by Finn on the half forward flank with only seconds left and distance an issue. The siren beat the searching pass into the goal square. Fitzroy ahead by 21 points but the game not yet settled.

A goal to Surrey Park was the first of the final quarter and showed that this was still an open competition between two very attacking teams. A mark to Himi in the goal square resulted in an easy goal to the Roys. James got the ball to Sam who snapped the Roy's thirteenth goal for the day. Surrey Park fought back with the next goal and point. Mick took a great mark in defence to make stop what could have been an easy Surrey Park goal. The ball back in the Roy's forward zone, this time Sam on a very hard angle..... doesn't matter, another goal to Sam and the Roys. A point to Surrey Park, a point to Sam, a point to Surrey Park. Darcy took a fantastic mark, Martin took one of his legendary runs, the game was still being fought hard. A point to Issac and another goal to Surrey Park. "SIREN"

"WE HAVE WON TWO ON THE TROT ON OUR HOME GROUND!" Howard (the coach)

Well Done Roys, another exciting match.
