FITZROY 2 v CANTERBURY GREENS 15th May 2010
Another beautiful Autumn afternoon, this week was "UMPIRE APPRECIATION" round and we were fortunate to have not one, but four umpires to appreciate. Elia started in the ruck, doing as he does best, knocking the ball down to our running players. Roys threw themselves at the ball to stop it from getting into the opposition's hands. It was clear from the outset this was going to be a hard fought match. Free kicks seemed to be going all Canterbury's way. Fortunately, Canterbury did not capitalise on the opportunities in the goal square, with points going on the score board. No. 38 for Canterbury towered over all our players, making it hard for the Roys to get the ball. The "Power Boys" marked and attacked well, nice marks by Sam, James, Himi and Issac, but the illusive goal was not going on the Roys score. At the end of the first quarter the Roys were two points to Canterbury's ten points. Second quarter the Roys fired up. A goal to Issac, the first of the game, another great mark to Himi, and a goal to Tom and the Roys were back in the game. James kicked the third goal for the quarter. Strong tackling by Elia, Martin, Michael, Issac, Sam and Tom, everyone was in there desperately trying to get the ball to the Roy's goal. The half time siren sounded, the Roys were one point up. The ground unfortunately was not perfect, with a quagmire of black smelly mud in the middle of the ground. As the team ate their oranges and snakes during the half time break, they looked more like soldiers with camouflage paint all over them. It has been a long time since the mums have had to scrub jumpers, shorts and socks at the end of the match. Much of the half time break was spent banging the mud and grass of the boots. Canterbury dominated the start of the third quarter, with the first six scores of the quarter going to Canterbury, fortunately four were points. Then Elia got the ball to James and he snapped his second goal. Elia continued to run and tackle any one in his way, but the Roys could not add to their score. At three quarter time the Roys were ten points down. Again, points were the main scores being added to Canterbury's score, Himi worked hard to ensure the Canterbury goal square was defended. Finally, Nick kicked the ball to Floyd, who marked and then goaled. Unfortunately, it wasn't the Roy's day today, next week we take on Richmond at Home. SCORE BOARD
