FITZROY 2 v St. MARY'S GREENS 30th May 2010

Finally, a day of real football weather, overcast and windy with the Roys kicking against the breeze in the first quarter. A great mark in front of goal by John stopped St. Mary's from getting their first goal. While St. Mary's finally opened the scoring , but time and again during the Quarter Fitzroy relied John's marking to stop the ball dead in its tracks. Then, the first score on the board for the Roys, a minor to Hudson. The Fitzroy defense stood up valiantly, with Noah being notable in his efforts, but on the whole the play was scrambly, but the scoring mainly going St. Mary's way. The Roys had gone in to the first quarter break with only one point on the board.

The second quarter started with Himi kicking the first goal for the Roys. Elia defended and fought to get possession of the ball. Martin kicked one of his booming kicks, then a flurry of points onto the Roy's score - four in all. The Roys needed a goal. John cleverly tricked the opposition, by running in the wrong direction. This opened up a great opportunity for Connor to take a great mark. After Connor's hand pass, half of the team either touched or handled the ball, before Lewis marked and kicked a well-needed goal just before the half-time siren. The Roys had out scored St. Mary's in the second quarter.

The first two goals of the third quarter went to St. Mary's. The Roys responded with a magnificent soccer kick by Walt, the result - a goal! Hudson and Connor both worked well in defense, but despite their efforts two further goals went onto St. Mary's score. Himi continued to mark strongly stopping St. Mary's from getting anymore scoring chances. Again a point was all the team could add to the score board before the end of the third quarter.

The Roys went into the final quarter 34 points down. Jesse kicked the first goal for the quarter, our defense was trying hard, but anything we kicked was matched by St. Mary's. Noah continued to play well, as did Elia who after a great smother, ran down the field towards the Roy's goal, but to no avail. A beautiful mark to Finn in St. Mary's goal square, and another great mark to Jesse, the Roys were not giving up, they kept on trying. Then Darcy H. in his first game of the year returning from injury, kicked the Roy's fifth goal. The game was over, but the Roys had not given up without a fight.

In the after-match wrap up, Captain Issac, named Elia "the player of the day". Well Done Elia, for receiving your second "best on ground" this season.

Next week, back at Brunswick St oval for our game against the Preston Bullants. Go Roys!!!!!!
